Bedford Mills
Bedford Mills, Ontario, Canada located north of Kingston in South Frontenac County.
This gristmill was built by a Mr. Stanton for William Chaffey in 1848 on property owned
by Benjamin Tett. It was Benjamin Tett who in 1829 recognized the power potential of the 30 foot drop
of water, known as ""Buttermilk Falls"", between Devil Lake and Loon Lake. He built his first sawmill
here at that time and in 1831 received title to the land and in 1832 received water rights to the falls.
A small community which was to be known as Bedford Mills began to grow.
Today Bedford Mills is a sleepy rural residential area and the stone gristmill built by Mr. Stanton
is now used as a beautiful private residence.
